You might not know about it, but the current cost of natural gas could have an effect on how much you pay for your electricity, even if you don’t burn gas. That’s because fuel costs make up around a third of the price of electicity generation. In the state of Texas, that price is mostly related to how much it costs to create power by burning natural gas. So, when natural gas prices go up, your power bill does, too. This could cause some real confusion if you don’t know how it works.

According to the 1999 Texas Electric Choice Act, providers of retail electricity are permitted to chance their prices twice a year, based on the cost of natural gas. This allows customers and the market to benefit, by making sure that the price of your power reflects market conditions. So what do you do if you’re unhappy with your electric costs? You can always choose a new supplier with better prices and service that makes you happier. That’s why the Act was passed – to give Texans the ability to decide where and who their electricity is coming from. You can also choose a supplier with methods of production you prefer, such as wind power. This is excellent for people who are concerned about the environmental impact of their energy usage.

How is the price determined? First, the composite price of natural gas is calcuated according to the NYMEX Henry-Hub natural gas index. For every business day in a ten day period, the closing forward twelve-month prices are averaged. Then, providers take a look at the price that’s come up. If that number is more than four percent higher than the price used to set the fuel factor that’s being used at the moment, the provider can file for an increase in their prices (it’s rare to see a supplier file for a reduction).

Then, the percentage by which the price of natural gas has increased is applied to the current fuel factor, and the new fuel factor is created. It takes either twenty days or forty-five days for the new factor to become effective – depending on whether or not the supplier requests a hearing. When hearings are requested, the fuel factor doesn’t affect your bill until the supplier wins the hearing, and the longer time period is the one that applies.

While increases may seem confusing, they’re really quite simple. If natural gas costs more, so does all Texas electricity, even that which is not produced using natural gas. Next time you see something confusing on your bill, keep this in mind. It might help to explain a few things.

Most electricity is generated from burning fossil fuels but there are alternative electricity sources available. The most popular electricity source is from burning coal, 50% or electricity production, the nuclear power, 20% production, natural gas, 18% production, hydroelectric, 6.5% production, petroleum, 3% productions and renewable energy source, 2.3% production. Green Products Has Found a Low-cost Balloon-shaped Solar Design That Is Highly Efficient

At Green Products, we have come across a product from Cool Earth: Solar Balloons. Cool Earth was created with the mandate of producing electricity using solar power, specifically solar cells. Solar power is not a new concept, but how the sunlight is collected and concentrated is truly unique.

One of the areas of concern with the current flat-panel solar design is cost. Flat-panel designs require metal cases, rigid mounting hardware, heavy glass and large amounts of cell material. The cost per watt for solar panels is generally 5 to 7 times greater than conventional power plants. This is no longer true with the solar balloon system.

One side of the balloon is made from reflective silver Mylar plastic. The other half is transparent to allow in sunlight. The silver material is parabolic-shaped to concentrate the sunlight on to a single point to achieve maximum light concentration. This is why high performance solar cells are used.

This unique design can concentrate the sunlight so well, it produces 300 to 400 times more power per square inch of solar cells than traditional flat-panel solar systems. By regulating the air pressure inside the balloon, they can focus the concentrated sunlight directly on the photocell. The air regulating system is designed to maintain the proper balloon size as the outside air temperature increases or decreases.

Each balloon is eight feet in diameter and can withstand over 100 mile per hour winds. The balloons are linked together in series, with the initial installation able to produce 10 megawatts, enough to power 3,500 homes during the day.

One of the areas under consideration is the need to add more peaking power plants, also known as peaker plants. A peaker plant is operational only when demand for electricity is at the greatest, like during the hot summer months. This green product could be used to eliminate rolling brown outages that we have encountered in the past few years.

Another of the aspects we find most interesting at Green Products is how the balloons are linked together with wire, wood and sheet metal. There are two types of home solar power systems that can be created to provide energy to the home. They can be categorized as passive and direct applications of solar energy. The passive systems are generally to do with utilizing the thermal properties of the Sun. So water or a room can be passively heated by the Sun. The water can be plumbed into the home to be used for everyday needs. By understanding how hot air moves, a heated room can direct heat energy to other parts of the home to provide warmth. However is going to focus on the direct home solar power systems that create electricity for use in the home.

In terms of the use of solar energy, creating electricity from sunlight is a relatively new innovation. The technology needed to create electricity from sunlight was first developed to a commercially viable standard in the 1950’s. It is known as the photovoltaic (PV) cell. A PV cell is made of a silicon compound that reacts when photons from sunlight strike it. This reaction causes an electron from the silicon atom to be thrown loose. When a number of PV cells are linked together in a serial configuration, the electrons flow to a positive charge creating an electrical current.

A number of PV cells in a serial configuration is known as a solar module. When numerous solar modules are linked together in either a parallel or serial configuration they are known as a solar panel.

Solar panels are the devices that you may have seen on the roofs of houses in your neighborhood. This is effectively giving you credit for the electricity that you are creating with your home solar power system.

A home solar power system can be either on or off the grid. On the grid is sometimes referred to as a net metering system or grid tied.Various states have laws that require utility companies to offer net metering programs to people using solar panels. This effectively means that they are fairly compensated for the electricity that they create rather than having to sell it at a wholesale rate.

Off grid systems are exactly that. The home is not connected to an electricity supply and all the power must be generated by the solar power system. More thought needs to go into the system and a back up system is needed if the solar panels cannot meet your energy demands or there is bad weather.

Many people will have a fuel powered generator for this purpose. People more interested in renewable power sources might go for a wind power generator or some other renewable system. Another aspect of an off the grid system is that DC needs to be stored in a battery bank for use at night or when the Sun is not shining. This is another responsibility and space has to be found on the property to securely house the batteries.

Most people go for an on grid system with net metering as this is less responsibility and can stack up economically. With more experience they may go more off grid. Of course this is more responsibility and work but the potential to save money is greater.

Isopropyl alcohol: This product dries the skin and can cause premature aging of the skin. FD&C Color Pigments: These substances are full of heavy metal salts that penetrate the skin. As synthetic colors made from coal tar, studies have revealed these substances as being carcinogenic.
